The history of Upper Darby Township is being painted on to a 135-foot long mural at 44 S. 69th Street, writes Kevin Tustin for the Delaware County News Network.
The mural is up the street from the Tower Theater and the 69th Street Transportation Center.
It will include depictions of the Swedish Log Cabin, Collenbrook Farm, the Tower Theater, the high school drumline and other Upper Darby community elements.
The face of Emmy-winner Tina Fey will be added to the mural, along with the spelling of “hello” in 60 different languages.
“I’ve never painted something this large and I’ve never had anything public,” said Upper Darby School District art teacher Christina Roberts who is taking the lead to design and create the mural.
Roberts is going for a simple, loose look that people walking by can enjoy.
A $4,000 grant from AARP was awarded for the project.
Upper Darby administrator for Community Business and Economic Development Tamara Crump said many people had been working on the idea of a mural as a welcoming spot to the township.
The mural is expected to be completed before the township’s third annual international festival Sept. 28.
