It turns out a favorite backyard barbecue beverage is also good for the economy, even our local economy, according to beerservesamerica.org.
In Delaware County’s 5th Congressional District, all things beer-related generated 2,065 jobs, $119,199,800 in wages and $414,895,000 in economic output.
Drill down into the 5th District numbers, and beer generated:
- 34 jobs in brewing
- 127 jobs in distribution
- 53 agricultural jobs
- 668 jobs in business and personal services
- 15 jobs in mining
- 23 jobs in construction
- 224 jobs in finance, insurance and real estate
- 131 manufacturing jobs
- 189 retail jobs
- 276 transportation and communication jobs
- 235 travel and entertainment jobs
- 53 wholesale jobs
- 9 government jobs
- 28 jobs in other categories.
Nationally, the beer industry contributes more than $328 billion in economic output, 1.6 percent of U.S. GOP. It employs 70,000 people.
The folks that manufacture bottles and cans, cardboard case boxes, brewing equipment and marketing displays generate nearly $102 billion in economic activity and are responsible for nearly 437,000 jobs.
For every one job in a brewery or beer importer, another 31 jobs in other industries are supported.
