The property and buildings of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood have been sold to Main Line Health, paving the way for the seminary’s move to Aston, near Neumann University, writes Matthew Gambino for catholicphilly.com.

Price and details of the landmark sale have not been made public. It concludes a nearly seven-year process to sell some or all of the seminary’s 19 buildings and 75 acres of land.

Main Line Health owns Lankenau Medical Center across Lancaster Avenue from the seminary and operates six hospitals and health centers in the Philadelphia region.

A letter sent  to archdiocesan priests by Bishop Timothy Senior, rector of St. Charles, said the seminary will continue to operate at the Wynnewood site for up to five years during the transition.

In 2017, the seminary began negotiating a partnership with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, who own land in Aston near Neumann University, to construct new seminary buildings. That agreement is nearing completion, Bishop Senior wrote.

St. Charles Borromeo Seminary will continue to exist as the Philadelphia Archdiocese’s seminary for priestly formation as it has since 1832, even in the new Aston location.
