Talking Parakeets Bring Joy to Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia

The Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in Aston have been enjoying the company of two talking parakeets.

Francis and Claire came into the lives of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia in Aston as a gift from a priest on a retreat.

They have given much love ever since and received it in return, reports Mateo Iadonisi for 6abc.

Francis and Claire are parakeets, and according to the Sisters of Saint Francis, you never know what they’re going to say next.

The budgie parakeets bring joy, comfort, and companionship to the Sisters living at the Assisi House in Aston.

“These birds came into our lives seven years ago. I believe that they have a little bit of God in them,” said Sister Stephanie Marie Unger.

She pointed out that their order’s namesake, St. Francis, talked to the birds, and they were his companions.

“The birds keep the sisters happy. I mean, they go in, they sometimes talk to them, you know, and just feel relaxed when they get out.”

Francis and Claire are particularly good for Sisters with dementia.

Sister Albert Mary McSwiggin said the birds respond because they are loved.

“You can’t help but love these creatures. They’re very much a sign of God’s individual love for each one of us.”
