Students learning Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising recently showcased their original designs, which included everything from shimmering evening gowns to avant-garde raincoats, at Harcum College’s Annual Fashion Show in Bryn Mawr.

This year’s theme was “Reaching for the Stars,” and the collections were haute couture.

Twenty students displayed their collections in Klein Hall to 250-plus guests who lined a U-shaped catwalk under purple stars projected on the walls and ceiling.

“The Harcum College Fashion Show is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year,” said Julian Crooks, the college’s Assistant Director of Fashion Programs who coordinated the event with Director Winifred Curtis. “This year’s show was particularly inspired by our senior designers showing collections that focused on creativity and complex construction. Collections were based on themes as diverse as geometry, royalty, and women’s rights.”

Senior Danielle Rice emerged with the Best of Show Award, while Ashley Bernadel won Best Senior Collection and Kendra Kennedy won Best Junior Collection.

Students receive professional critique and judging as part of the Fashion Design program and Fashion Show production. Critiques were offered by:

  • Frank Agostino, owner/designer of Agostino
  • Mark Vitulano, author of The Betsey Johnson Story
  • Angela Edmonds, Showroom 77
  • Robyn Dombey, QVC

Serving as judges were Lamont and Jeana Bowling, Producers of Atlantic City Fashion Week. The Bowlings invited Rice and Neneh Jalloh to show collections in their Fall Show.

“The crowd of over 250 in attendance was ecstatic,” said Crooks. “Our students begin to prepare for the show in the fall semester, coming up with concepts and sourcing textiles, and begin construction on their garments in the spring. They work long days, nights, and weekends in the studio, and the results make it all worthwhile.”
