Baseball All-Star and winning manager Mike Scioscia was a few years late to accept his induction in the 2012 Achievers Hall of Fame but on May 31, 2019, he made it, writes Susan Serbin for the Daily Times.
As Steve Todaro, president of the Springfield Area Education Foundation, explained, “This is the first time Mike has been back to Springfield in the summer, being otherwise busy. Mike wanted to point out he is not retired, but unemployed.”
With a smile, Scioscia, Springfield Class of 1976, accepted the award without any formal statement, but was extremely cordial at the May 31 luncheon.
A very fit Scioscia was in his hometown to visit friends and family, and to attend a few events, including a special birthday celebration for his Springfield baseball coach, the legendary Harry “Ace” Bell.
The Scioscia family sponsors the Florence Scioscia Scholarship in honor of Mike’s mother, who taught elementary school in the district for 30 years.
A catcher, who spent his entire playing career with the Dodgers, and as Los Angeles Angels manager 2000-2018, Scioscia can add the SHS awards to his resume.
