This month marks the 75th anniversary when Tyler Arboretum in Media ceased being a summer residence and working farm in 1944 and became a public arboretum, writes Rachel Spurlock for Main Line Today.

To celebrate the change from private to public, the Arboretum will host a “Gateway to Nature” sculpture exhibit, highlighting 13 regional artists.

The exhibit debuts May 11 and will be on display through Sept. 2. Installations such as a wind tunnel will be located throughout the 650-acre property.

Among the artists is Media’s Parris Bradley, who created a gateway called “Washing Nature” using 17 reclaimed washing machine drums filled with native plants.

She has designed other exhibits for the arboretum, including the first wheelchair accessible Tulip Tree House and the Troll Bridge.

Her newest installation is a whimsical structure that leads visitors to the rhododendron garden.

Tyler Arboretum will host guided tours of the exhibition on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. Maps for self-guided tours will also be available.

The arboretum is located at 515 Painter Road in Media and houses plant collections and historic trees, plus 17 miles of hiking trails.
