The Radnor Planning Commission denied a proposal May 6 by Wawa to build a new store and gas station on Lancaster Avenue at Aberdeen Avenue, writes Natalie Kosteni for the Philadelphia Business Journal 

The board’s action didn’t necessarily bring the project to an end, but issues will need to be resolved before it can move forward.

At a meeting in April, Radnor’s solicitor indicated the proposal may not adhere to the township’s zoning ordinances.

“It puts us as the planning commission as judge and jury and I don’t believe we are qualified… on a zoning question,” said Skip Kunda, vice chairman of the commission.

The developer has an option to go before the township’s commissioners, which could resolve whether it violates local zoning laws.

The controversial project has been opposed by residents worried about noise, lighting, large tractor trailers and other issues.

The retail portion of the project is permitted but the gas pumps that Wawa wants is a non-conforming use even though there is a gas station with a car wash already on the site, according to the township.

A variance or special exception would be needed for the development to proceed with the Wawa project.
