Delaware County joined a country-wide observance recently of the 68th annual National Day of Prayer, writes Kathleene E. Carey for Delaware County News Network.

Crowds at Rose Tree Park in Upper Providence focused on this year’s theme, “Love One Another,” as they celebrated the freedom available in this country to have faith and worship as one pleases, as protected by the Constitution.

The audience focused May 2 on 13 specific prayers, from those suffering from drugs and addiction to victims of suicide and bullying to government leaders and country to veterans and armed forces to police, fire and emergency medical teams.

Delaware County Council Chairman John McBlain spoke of how strong his father, Paul, a Catholic deacon, is in his faith and how family and the public often asked him to provide words of prayer.

After Paul suffered two strokes, McBlain and his family were overwhelmed by the multitudes who offered prayers for his recovery.

Tonya Collins of Upper Providence, a self-proclaimed Christian, was a first-time attendee. “It’s sort of like putting feet to your faith. So, I said, ‘I should be there … because we do need prayer.”
