Inspired by her students, Conestoga High School teacher Deb Ciamacca has quit her job to run as a Democrat for Delaware County’s 168th District seat in the Pennsylvania State House, writes Anna Orso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The social studies teacher made the decision while showing a documentary about her former student, Chris Hurst. He quit his job to run for and win a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates after his girlfriend, a journalist, was killed on live television.
“I thought if this kid can do it,” she said, “I can do it, too.”
The 60-year-old ex-Marine, a resident of Media, already made waves when she very publicly stood up against President Trump’s idea to arm teachers with guns.
“I will not arm myself with a gun in my own classroom just because those in power refuse to wield the more powerful weapon of common sense,” Ciamacca wrote in an op-ed for Time magazine.
She announced her campaign in February and is running for a legislative seat in the moderate district that party leaders see as ripe for a flip.
