The Christian Sanderson Museum in Chadds Ford has several artifacts related to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, but one is somewhat mysterious, writes Gene Pisasale for the Chester County Press.

A three-part display in the museum’s Battlefield Room has a piece of a bandage that was allegedly wrapped around Lincoln’s head after he was shot.

The bandage is said to have belonged to Dr. Jonathan Rose. But there is no Jonathan Rose reported to have attended to the president at the time. He may have been part of the team that prepared Lincoln’s body for the funeral.

The only corroborating document was written more than a century after the event. Marjorie Z. Orcutt, 92, wrote a letter with her version of what happened that fateful night.

“When the President was shot, Dr. Rose applied the bandage, which I saw as a child in his office,” she wrote. “I knew that he had given a piece of it to Christian Sanderson, which I understood was on display in his museum.”

With little other evidence, though, the story of Dr. Rose may remain a mystery forever.
