Retired neurosurgeon Fred Simeone has spent a half-century collecting race cars, and his impressive collection of more than 60 world-class vintage sports racers was open free to all fathers yesterday.

The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum boasts cars that date from 1909 to 1996, in a collection that spans the globe, from cars that competed in Italy’s Mille Miglia to a record speed-breaker from Bonneville Salt Flats.

The Museum is located on an industrial strip near the Philadelphia International Airport, a hop, skip, and a jump from Essington, writes Steve Bohnel of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Standard admission is $12. Children 8 and under are free.

According to Bohnel, the 80-year-old Simeone first fell in love with cars by tagging along to junkyards with his father Anthony, who died in 1972.

“My father was my entire stimulus to be a doctor and to be a car guy,” said Simeone. “We used to do house calls together, and we would go to junkyards. The collection in many ways honors my dad. Four of them were his.”

Simeone joked about how he wouldn’t be able to afford any of the cars if he purchased them now.

“The value has gone crazy,” he said. “But if you bought them in the ’70s, which I did, then they were affordable. And I owe the fact that I knew what to get in the ’70s from my dad.”
