Garnet Valley Wins National Hi-Q Championship

By

The Garnet Valley High School Hi-Q team won its second-ever National Hi-Q Championship in a competitive contest against regional champions.

Garnet Valley recently competed against teams from Marinette High School in Wisconsin, Alma Bryant High School in Alabama, and Stanwood High School in Washington for the national crown via video conference at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit in Morton.

The national championship was similar to all standard Hi-Q meets. Teams answered a total of 16 questions, including sports, math, and team choice. Teams had four chances to answer their questions. Four points were awarded for correct answers, with the point value decreased by one for each try. Unlike in-person contests, every team could participate in toss-up questions and no buzzers were used for missed point opportunities.

Rick Durante, the Delco Hi-Q Director and Quizmaster, started the match with Quizmasters from each location taking turns asking questions, as teams viewed one other on a big screen.

Garnet Valley led at the half and maintained their lead in the second half by correctly answering all of its questions. By the time the last question was posed to teams in in math, Garnet Valley had already secured first place.

Final score: Garnet Valley 59, Alma Bryant 45, Stanwood 28, Marinette 22.

Led by veteran faculty advisors Lesley Arensberg and Sandy Dubnansky, the Garnet Valley Hi-Q team included Neeraj Shenoy, Brandon Gorski, Harry Markel, Kushagra Gupta, Jeffrey Lin, Patrick Li, Aadarsh Balaji, Sai Mamidala, Aditi Sridhar, and Vishesh Patel.

Garnet Valley will receive the Henderson Trophy at the Partners in Education Celebration on May 2 at the Drexelbrook. The trophy is named after Delco Hi-Q advocate Wilbur C. Henderson.
