Former Haverford School Psychologist Publishes Book on How to Raise Boys Free of Stereotypes

By

Michael C. Reichert

Michael C. Reichert, who worked as a psychologist at The Haverford School for three decades, has published a parenting book titled How to Raise a Boy: The Power of Connection to Build Good Men, writes Anna Orso for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Reichert is a founder of the research collaborative Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives. In his book, he instructs parents how to listen and pay attention in ways centered on the child, so boys feel heard. He discusses how to help them develop strong connections with others and talk about their emotions.

In his book, Reichert wanted to summarize his more recent research, particularly interpersonal neuroscience. This relatively new field states that human beings are wired to connect, and if overlooked, bad results usually follow.

“The key is that the relationship exists for the sake of the boy and it’s for the boy to initiate in the relationship,” he said. “What helicopter parents or snowplow parents are doing is they’re essentially acting out of their own anxiety and projecting that onto the child.”

Reichert will be discussing his book at The Haverford School on May 8.
