Modell’s Sporting Goods announced this week it has filed for bankruptcy and is closing its remaining 115 stores nationwide.

That includes Modell’s in 69th Street, Upper Darby; on Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights, and at the Promenade at Granite Run in Media, writes Anne D’Innocenzio writing for the Associated Press as reported in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The family-owned New York-based sporting goods chain has been around for 100 years. More recently it has been unable to compete with Dick’s Sporting Goods which rebounded on sales by focusing on store service and catering to women.

It also faced competition from activewear lines out of Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, Lululemon and Gap’s Athleta.

A Modell’s spokeswoman said that as of Wednesday the company had 3,623 employees.

Liquidation sales will start Friday morning. Tiger Capital Group will oversee going-out-of-business sales.

Modell’s had previously liquidated 19 stores.

“Modell’s didn’t stand out,” said Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail. “There’s a lot more competition.”

Modell’s began in 1889, with a store opened by Morris A. Modell in Lower Manhatten, according to the company website.

The chain developed into 150 stores throughout the Northeast, run by the fourth generation of the Modell family.
