Washington Post Columnist Criticizes Delco Christian Grad for ‘Derailing Equal Rights Amendment’

In a column published last week, The Washington Post’s Petula Dvorak criticized Victoria Cobb, a graduate of the Delaware County Christian School and president of the Family Foundation of Virginia, for derailing the Equal Rights Amendment.

The ERA was first created 95 years ago and has been garnering support recently on Capitol Hill. Already, 37 states have ratified it, and Virginia was set to be the 38th. But a subcommittee in Virginia is now blocking its progress after heavy lobbying from Cobb.

Cobb’s problem with the bill is that her own success shows that women do not need a constitutional amendment to be successful.

“We aren’t insisting that we be treated like victims,” she said.

However, her opponents say that Cobb’s view is not shared by the vast majority of women who do not have her advantages. To this, she simply responds by citing her grandmother.

“Did my grandmother, while opposing the ERA, envision that I would someday lead an organization, earning the same pay as my male colleagues? Probably not,” she said. “But did I do it without the ERA? Yes, I did.”
