A bill introduced by Rep. Madeleine Dean and co-sponsored by 15 of her colleagues, including Reps. Chrissy Houlahan of Chester County and Mary Gay Scanlon of Delaware County, aims to ban undetectable plastic firearms, writes Justine McDaniel for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The legislation would prohibit anyone from owning a firearm that cannot be detected by walk-through metal detectors. The proposed law is an update to the 1988 Undetectable Firearms Act, which requires all firearms to contain stainless steel.

According to Dean, the existing law “does not adequately address today’s technologies or security risks.”

She said that today there is a more pressing issue: firearms made entirely of plastic “or with so much plastic that they fall below the current law’s detection standard.”

In addition to plastic or 3D-printed firearms, the law would outlaw all major firearm components that do not create an image in the shape of a gun in airport security detection systems. This includes the slide, cylinder, frame, or receiver of all firearms, including the barrel of a rifle or shotgun.

The proposal also aims to expand the law beyond X-ray machines by ensuring any standard airport detection devices can detect firearms.
