After decades of Republicans holding the reins of government in Delaware County, Democrats finally have a chance to take control in the 2019 election, writes Dave Davies for WHYY.

Democrats have been making steady gains in recent years, including taking two seats on the five-member County Council in 2017. The other three seats will be on the ballot later this year.

According to Democratic consultant Joe Corrigan, historic change is coming.

“I believe the Democrats will take all three of those seats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Delaware County Republican chairman Andy Reilly acknowledged that Democrats were helped by the demographic changes caused by people moving from Philadelphia to the suburbs.

But his party has a solid message to run on.

“The Republicans on Delaware County Council have held taxes stable for five years in a row now, and last year they provided a rebate,” he said.

Two of the three Republicans on County Council, Chairman John P. McBlain and Vice Chair Colleen Morrone, cannot run again after serving two terms. The third, Michael Culp, can seek re-election.

Chairs of both parties say several potential candidates have already expressed interest in running, but no names have yet been announced.
