Sarah Heyward, an adjunct professor at Widener University, has fashioned a unique art installation on the I-95 bridge in Chester, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

Heyward has created a plastic bag mural on the fencing of the Walnut Street bridge, which connects the university to the eastern side of the city.

“The bridge was interesting to me because it invites you to walk over,” said Heyward. “It serves as a metaphor to invite people to a space to congregate.”

She opted for disposable plastic bags for the mural to promote recycling and repurposing in the community. Heyward and a number of students attached the donated bags to the fencing over two days in December.

The patterns created by the bags include spirals shaped like flowers, the word “HI,” and several abstract designs.

“It looks awesome,” said Blair Nowacki, a sophomore nursing student. “I love all the colors outside, and I’m happy to be part of it.”

Since the bags deteriorate over time, the display has a limited lifespan, so Heyward will eventually have to take them down. However, she is looking forward to future projects on the bridge with other artists.
