Commercial Development has donated land for the construction of a mass-transit station in the hopes of drawing in projects to the 420-acre former site of Claymont Steel that straddles the Pennsylvania-Delaware state line near Marcus Hook, writes Joseph DiStefano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The developer donated 15.5 acres for the station with 800 parking spaces for people using SEPTA trains and DART buses. The new station will replace the current unheated shelters with plastic roofs that cover only a small portion of the peak crowds.

The idea behind the donation is that the replacement station near the I-95 will attract more trains and commuters, along with projects and tenants for the developer’s upcoming 3.7 million square foot complex.

According to Commercial Development, the site will be more attractive with a mass-transit center nearby.

“People will start using the station, not just to go to Philadelphia or Wilmington, but to come to Claymont,” said Steve Collins, the executive vice president of Commercial Development.
