Lancaster has dethroned Florida as the nation’s best place to retire, according to newly published rankings by U.S. News & World Report, write Mike Larson and Alison Burdo for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Despite Florida having seven cities on the list this year, Lancaster took the top spot.

To compile rankings for the 100 Best Places to Retire in the USA, U.S. News analyzed data for the 100 largest metropolitan areas across the country to assess how they meet the retirement needs of Americans. Among the criteria used were the happiness of local residents, housing affordability, tax rates, and healthcare quality.

According to the report, Lancaster tops the list due in part to “a balance between natural and commercial spaces that residents appreciate,” as well as “increases in housing affordability and the overall happiness of its residents.”

Lancaster offers something for everyone with its close-knit church communities, indie coffee shops, and expansive farms.

Philadelphia checked in at No. 31 courtesy of its “unique setting for an eclectic mix of modern lifestyles, mingling both the edgy and the sophisticated.”
