Tough Mudder, the events company that organizes challenging and muddy obstacle races, is bringing gyms to Chester and Delaware counties, writes Caroline Cunningham for Philadelphia magazine.

But there is little overlap between the muddy experience of the race and the new gym. Instead, they will feature a 45-minute, high-intensity, interval-training workout using equipment like kettlebells and battle ropes.

The classes draw from the races by creating a sense of camaraderie, with participants needing to rely on their team to make it through each session. The new gyms will be run as franchises, with business partners Geoffrey Veale and Andrew Soule heading a five-franchise deal for the Philadelphia area.

Soule had been on the lookout for a good business model for a while. So when he saw the Tough Mudder Bootcamp was looking to expand, he jumped at the opportunity and convinced his longtime friend Veale to join him.

While no leases have been signed yet, they plan to open in the Philadelphia suburbs, including Delaware County, Chester County, and Montgomery County.

The goal is to for the first location to be up and running within six months, and all five within three years.
