Wawa is testing out portable checkout kiosks in the hopes of reducing long wait times for customers, writes Kris Rhim for Billy Penn.

The Wawa at Broad and Walnut streets in Philadelphia offered customers a chance to skip the regular queue this week and instead use the miniature checkout counter on wheels. However, the kiosk only accepts cards, so anyone paying cash is out of luck.

The mobile setup has a small table area where items can be placed to be rung up, a barcode scanner, a credit card reader, and a bagging station.

“We’re testing this out,” said one of the store’s staffers.

He said the Broad Street store is currently the only store in Philadelphia testing the mobile registers. But he said that everybody who tried it seemed pleased at their speedy exit.

The kiosks are also being tested at several busier stores along the Jersey Shore.

“We are always testing new ways to improve convenience and the customer experience,” said Lori Bruce, Wawa’s spokesperson. “At this time, we don’t have a lot of details available.”
