Haverford resident David Long, 16, won a one-year contract at a recent Overwatch tournament hosted by a Philadelphia e-sports firm to exclusively compete for Fusion University, writes Courtney Becker for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The goal of the “Hometown Heroes” Overwatch tournament that took place earlier this year was to sign a player to Fusion University, the franchise’s development team owned by Comcast Spectacor. The event attracted close to 100 Overwatch gamers from the Philadelphia area. Throughout the event, they provided Long with serious competition for first place and the highly coveted contract.

Long said that, while he did not expect to get signed when he went into the tournament, he was really happy with being given an opportunity to become a professional e-sports athlete.

Months after the competition, Long said he is still pushing himself to become the best he can be, to make sure he still has a place on the team even when his contract is up.

“I’d like to put all of my effort into the e-sports potential,” he said, while still focusing on school and computer science as a backup to being an athlete. “E-sports are something I’m really passionate about right now.”
