Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School introduced Upper Darby’s first community garden at an official ribbon-cutting last week, writes Kevin Tustin for the News of Delaware County.

The garden is at the back of the school campus by the corner of Huey and Lansdowne avenues. The ceremony was attended by local dignitaries and the creators, Stacey and Sean McNicholl.

Upper Darby Community Outreach Corporation volunteers were on hand to help pick the first vegetables. Ultimately, the garden could yield more than 3,000 pounds of fresh produce a season for the Saint Vincent dePaul Society Food Pantry at Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Darby.

“Our passion is urban farming and we wanted to share our passion with our community as lifelong Darby residents,” said Stacey McNicholl.

The original idea for the garden came from the McNicholls, who shared it with Pastor David Shaheen, the Upper Darby Community Outreach Corporation’s Executive Director, before taking it to Bonner-Prendie President John Cooke. He immediately offered the plot at the back of the school.

“We’re looking for even more opportunities to get students involved with our Christian Service Project to do some community service,” Cooke said.
