Several Members of Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 Have Ties to Delco

Boothwyn native Billy “White Shoes” Johnson is one of several members of the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 with ties to Delaware County, according to a report in the Daily Times.

Other members include Chester native Danny Murtaugh, former Archbishop Carroll girls basketball coach Muffet McGraw, and Villanova football legend Brian Westbrook, and Louis Santop.

Johnson is a Chichester High School and Widener graduate who played in three NFL Pro Bowls.

Murtaugh spent 10 years in the big leagues and won the World Series as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960 and 1971.

McGraw, a Saint Joseph’s graduate, started her coaching career at Carroll. She moved to Notre Dame and has led the Fighting Irish to eight Final Fours, including the 2001 and 2018 championships.

Westbrook set an NCAA record for all-purpose yards at Villanova and was a third-round draft pick of the Eagles.

Santop was a catcher in the Negro Leagues who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He closed out his career playing with the Hilldale Club in Darby.

The induction ceremony will take place Nov. 1 at SugarHouse Casino.
