In the wake of several school shootings throughout the country, Robert Vito of Glen Mills-based Unequal Technologies presented 15 eighth-graders at St. Cornelius School in Chadds Ford with bulletproof protection, writes John Chambless for the Chester County Press.

During a recent assembly, Vito, whose daughters attend the school, handed out bulletproof panels for students to put in their backpacks.

In addressing the students, Vito said that he hoped the need to use Safe Shield would never arise, but that it is “better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”

The company that develops sports and protective gear using Kevlar started working on Safe Shield after St. Cornelius Principal Barbara Rosini asked Vito to come up with something to help keep children safe.

“When Ms. Rosini asked if there was something we could develop to protect the students,” he said, “I went to our research team, and we’ve been working on that for over a year.”

The bulletproof panels that weigh just 20 ounces are a quarter-inch thick. They have been shown to stop a range of bullets and can be used to deflect shrapnel and stop knife attacks.
