Since their historic election to Delaware County Council last November, Democrats Kevin Madden and Brian Zidek have found acceptance – and a few heated discussions – on the mostly-Republican, five-member legislative body, writes Vinny Vella in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Madden, a tech entrepreneur, and Zidek, a medical reinsurance executive, were the first Democrats elected to the county’s executive board in four decades. Their three Republican colleagues are chairman John McBlain, vice chairman Colleen Morrone, and Michael Culp.

“I ran to be a threat to the status quo, and I expected a degree of concern from those who’ve profited from the status quo,” said Zidek. “People elected me and Kevin because they know we ran for the right reasons.

“On the campaign trail, I said, ‘If you don’t like what’s happening in D.C., clean up your backyard,’” said Zidek, who noted that he, like Madden, took an interest in local politics after President Donald Trump’s election. “The concerns that we ran on are about good governance, not electing the next Supreme Court justice. It’s not a universally Democratic or Republican issue.”
