Dozens of people gathered last week for the official opening of the new ALDI supermarket in Brookhaven, writes Kevin Tustin for the Daily Times.

Mayor Mike Hess was present to cut the ribbon on the chain’s first store in the western part of Delaware County.

“We’re excited about this and we welcome ALDI to Brookhaven,” said Hess. “We have a little slogan around here: We’re a community with unity. We always welcome new neighbors into the community.”

The ceremony was also attended by ALDI managers, Brookhaven council members, and State Rep. Leanne Krueger-Braneky.

The first 100 shoppers received ALDI gift cards and a reusable ALDI shopping bag.

The new ALDI store at 4801 Edgmont Avenue occupies the former Giant store that has relocated to a new shopping center across the street. The store’s opening on Tuesday is a part of the ongoing process to boost the borough’s economic development.

“This entire area has been kind of drab for a number of years, and with the new shopping center and the new ALDI, we’re excited about it,” said Hess.

This is the third ALDI store in Delaware County, with the others located in Collingdale and Lansdowne.
