Havertown native Tom Verica has directed nearly two dozen episodes of Scandal, the ABC drama set in Washington, D.C., including the April 19 finale, written by creator Shonda Rhimes and titled, ominously, “Over a Cliff,” writes Ellen Gray in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

While Verica did not reveal how the show will end its seven-season run, he did say it did not end the way he thought it might.

“This one caught me by surprise,” said Verica. “I’m looking forward to the audience’s response.”

Verica, a graduate of Haverford High School, got his start in television as a dancer on Philadelphia’s Dancin’ on Air. During the last three decades, he has worked as an actor. His roles include the father in the drama American Dreams, which is set in Philadelphia, and as the husband of Viola Davis’s character in How to Get Away with Murder, an ABC series also set in Philadelphia.

Verica left his job as the show’s producing director after last season to take on the same role at a new ABC legal drama, For the People, before returning to direct the Scandal finale.
