Chester High School is hoping to bring some of its renowned success on the basketball court to its new, one-of-a-kind coding club, writes Kathy Boccella for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Players from the boys and girls teams at Chester High are hoping to expand their career options by learning high-tech skills and convince their peers that software development is cool.

“There’s a million jobs for this – not everyone is going to college,” said Michael Smith, a junior point guard and co-captain of the Clippers.

Teaching students to be versatile and be able to make both game-winning baskets and apps for mobile devices is the dream of Chester Upland School District Superintendent Juan Baughn. He came up with the idea to start a high school coding club that would teach basketball players the fundamentals of writing computer software code.

According to girls coach Harry Burney, if the school can get its star athletes to succeed in coding, “then everyone else will follow suit because of their popularity.”

“If they see them doing it, they’ll do it,” he said.
