Former Fleer Executive, Frank Mustin of Lansdowne, Dies at 94

Frank H. Mustin, a former executive of the Frank H. Fleer bubble-gum company, recently died at the age of 94, writes Bonnie Cook for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Mustin was the grandson of Frank Fleer, who founder Fleer in 1885. The company produced the first commercially successful bubble gum (Dubble Bubble) in 1928. It was known for its tiny comic strip inside the waxed wrapper.

“That was part of the sales appeal,” said Mustin’s daughter, Emily Nicholson.

Mustin became director of the international branch of Fleer after his father died, while his brother Gilbert Jr. ran the company here. After his brother retired, Mustin took over and accepted a buyout offer in 1989.

Mustin was a graduate of Lansdowne Friends School and had a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Swarthmore College. He also served in the Navy at the end of World War II for two years.
