The City of Philadelphia has acquired a 135-acre parcel of land in Tinicum Township, adjacent to Philadelphia International Airport, that it plans to turn into an air cargo warehouse facility, writes Kathleen Carey in the Daily Times.

The parcel, known as the Henderson Tract, was purchased by the city in January for $54.5 million. Through the purchase, the city seeks to tap into the $54 billion air cargo transportation industry and optimize its resources during low-volume intervals.

“From the airport’s perspective, cargo is a great opportunity,” said James Tyrrell, chief revenue officer for the Philadelphia International Airport. “Cargo traditionally operates during the off hours. That allows us to really maximize the use of infrastructure that would otherwise be sitting there unused.”

“We are strategically located,” Tyrrell said. “The airport sits right on I-95. You can be in three states in 15 minutes. We need to leverage that geographic opportunity that we have.”

To provide direct airfield access from the Henderson Tract, Tinicum Island Road would need to be relocated.
