Smedley Tract to Become Recreational Area in the Heart of Middletown

By

Plans to develop Middletown’s Smedley Tract as a recreational area are ready to move forward after more than a decade of planning, writes Leslie Krowchenko for the Delaware County News Network.

Township Engineer Eric Janetka recently gave an update on the 76-acre property at the northeast corner of Rose Tree and North Middletown roads. The land was purchased from the Smedley Group 12 years ago to preserve it from development.

The plan to convert it into a municipal park is the result of a nine-month process that gave residents, business owners, and other interested parties a chance to weigh in on the development at public meetings. The township was also awarded a $25,000 state grant for a study.

The park will include two multi-purpose fields, as well as softball and baseball fields with plenty of parking.

Councilman Dean Helm said the design of the park has been seven years in the making.

“It will offer recreational use in the heart of the township,” he said. “The idea is it will provide practice fields for church leagues, community groups, and other organizations.”
