Renowned Political Pundit Takes Stage in Second Installment of Speaker Series

McKay Coppins

Publisher’s Note: This event has been postponed.

The Suburban Philadelphia Speaker Series continues with its second installment on Wednesday, Nov. 15, when journalist and author McKay Coppins takes the stage at People’s Light and Theatre in Malvern.

Coppins is a staff writer for The Atlantic, as well as a regular contributor to CNN and MSNBC.

The BYU graduate, who turned 30 this year, burst onto the scene with BuzzFeed in 2012, covering the presidential election and becoming an important source on Governor Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith.

Coppins is also the author of The Wilderness: Deep Inside the Republican Party’s Combative, Contentious, Chaotic Quest to Take Back the White House. On Nov. 15, he will discuss:

  • MEDIA, DISRUPTED: The Trump Era has given rise in America to two increasingly influential new-media ecosystems (one on the right, and one on the left), both of which are teeming with political propaganda, conspiracy theories, and fake news. In these “fever swamps,” the goal is not to report the news or even to comment on it — it is to weaponize and monetize information, often at the cost of accuracy, fairness, and truth. Coppins will share stories that illustrate the dangers these media trends pose to America’s democratic process, and discuss what we can do to combat the spread of fake news and misinformation.

  • POLITICAL PARTIES, DISRUPTED: For the past half-century, the GOP has been controlled by conservatives — people who believed in fiscal discipline, small government, and traditional social values. But the rise of President Trump — and his unique brand of populist nationalism — has changed all that, throwing his party into an ideological identity crisis. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is facing its own civil war, pitting self-avowed leftists and Bernie Sanders socialists against the center-left wing of the party. What does it mean to be a Republican or a Democrat today? The answers to that question may be changing for the next generation.

  • CAMPAIGNS, DISRUPTED: The 2016 presidential election upended much of the conventional wisdom about how we elect our political leaders. Coppins will share stories from the campaign trail that highlight this shift, and discuss what it means for voters.

  • THE PRESIDENCY, DISRUPTED: Finally, Coppins will share the weird/funny/insane story of his own personal history with President Trump, beginning with the accidental vacation he took with Trump back in 2014. Coppins will share his insights into the man whose rise has brought upheaval to American politics, recount details from his conversations with him, and talk about what really drives him.

A single ticket for the event is $35, while a pair is $60. A small group of four is $100, while a group of 10 tickets is $200.
