Chester native Denise White, known professionally as Avery Sunshine, has set the bar high with her recently released album Twenty Sixty Four, writes David Goodson for the New York Amsterdam News.

White, a graduate of Sacred Heart in Bryn Mawr, found solace and inspiration in the sounds of African-American music from a young age. To this day, she remembers the sounds of the local radio stations that played R&B.

It set her on a path that would help her find her own voice. She has since recorded three albums and become an inspiration to youngsters who want to pursue a career in music.

“My greatest wish is for our music to empower and encourage, in some way, everyone who hears it,” White said.

Her latest album, recorded with her musical partner and husband Dana Johnson, is a contender for Female R&B Album of the Year.

Twenty Sixty Four also represents the first time White has expanded her creative team, collaborating with others to create her vibrant tunes.

“This is something that I have always wanted to do,” she said. “I really wanted to have live strings on the record, so we got to do that this time.”
