Pennsylvanians are happier than more than half of the country, according to a new study on the happiest states in America, writes Richie Bernardo for WalletHub.

The study used previous research on happiness to determine which environmental factors have been linked to overall well-being and satisfaction. Previous studies have determined that good economic, emotional, physical, and social health are all crucial to a properly balanced and fulfilled life.

To find where the country’s population exhibits the best combination of these factors, the analysts examined all 50 states across 28 key metrics. These were divided into three main categories: Emotional and Physical Well-Being, Work Environment, and Community and Environment. The first category scored up to 50 points, while the other two scored a maximum 25 points each.

Some of the factors examined included depression rate, sports participation rate, and income growth. The results put Pennsylvania at No. 23, alongside Montana, with a total score of 55.66.

Pennsylvania ranked highest (14th) in the Community and Environment category. The state’s worst score was in Work Environment, where it ranked 37th. For Emotional and Physical Well-Being, Pennsylvania is right in the middle at 28.
