Boeing in Need of Right Kind of Defense Spending

Despite an onslaught of defense spending from the political guns of President Donald Trump, layoffs continue to threaten Boeing Corp.’s war helicopter facilities in Ridley Park.

That’s because the new military spending may not be the right kind of military spending, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Joseph DiStefano.

The $52 billion being called for by Trump includes money for Boeing’s Arizona-made Apache helicopters, not Delaware County-made Ospreys and Chinooks.

“This past year we’ve been experiencing layoffs. I believe we’re going to have another in April,” said United Auto Workers Local 1069 President Mike Tolassi. “But we’re hopeful. The company keeps telling us better days are ahead. We want them to go out and get these contracts.”

Boeing may get in on the $600 million requested to replace the Osprey destroyed in Yemen when Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens died raiding al-Qaeda terrorists.

But beyond that, it’s hard to know what Congress will approve, the article noted.
