With the uncertainty surrounding the fate of federal climate change data under the current presidential administration, Haverford College students, faculty, and staff have joined the effort to preserve this environmental information for the future, writes Susan Snyder for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The initiative comes as the Trump Administration has been downplaying the significance of climate change by expressing skepticism on the role humanity plays in the process.

The recent Data Rescue event was one of five around the country. Fifty students and staff at the Haverford event, held in cooperation with Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore colleges, collected valuable data from the Department of Energy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration websites for safekeeping.

“The fear is really there,” said John Dougherty, associate professor of computer science at Haverford. “Hopefully, we’re overreacting. This is in case we’re not.”
