Local Police Firing New Weapon in War Against Drugs

Unlike some of the area’s pharmaceutical heavyweights, the office complex of Adapt Pharma in Radnor is barely noticeable. But its only product packs quite a punch.

In the year since Adapt’s “antidote” for heroin overdoses, NARCAN Nasal Spray, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it has unassumingly put itself on the national scene, garnering a 32.5 percent market share of all naloxone sold in the U.S., according to a Bloomberg report by Felix Gillette.

“It’s amazing to see in person,” said Ridley Township Detective Shawn McGee. “People will be gurgling on their spit or out cold. You spray it up their nose, and all of a sudden, they are like, ‘What happened?’”

Ridley has supplied a two-pack in every squad car, and NARCAN is the drug of choice because it is not only about five times stronger than the market leader, but its $125 price tag pales in comparison to $4,500.

Ultimately, Adapt is fighting for a bigger piece of what was an $82 million industry last year, and is likely to continue growing.

“We’re growing rapidly, but I can’t put 500 sales reps on the streets to promote this message,” U.S. Operations President Mike Kelly said. “We’re not going to have Super Bowl ads. We’d be out of business.”
