Eight Swarthmore College students who worked as Chester Community Fellows over the summer recently presented their experiences to their campus community, writes Gina Myers for Swarthmore College News & Events.

Chester Community Fellowships are offered by the Lang Center for Civic & Social Responsibility to provide students with individual, full-time work experience in Chester’s nonprofit social service organizations.

The program lasts for 10 weeks and offers students the chance to work and gain experience in organizations such as the College Access Center of Delaware County, Chester Youth Court, and the Nia Center.

One of the participating students, Jacob Demreem, worked at the Chester Housing Authority, teaching computer skills to children. He found the work to be both challenging and extremely rewarding.

“Being that Chester is affected by gun violence, economic turmoil, and other factors, negative external influences did intrude in my classroom,” he said. But “the opportunity to engage with Chester as a community, which we at Swarthmore do not always do enough, has been one of a kind.”
