Prospect Park teen Hanna Maier is continuing the important work she started at her school with an anti-bullying campaign, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.
Maier, 14, began an anti-bullying campaign when she was in fifth grade at Prospect Park School. Her efforts led to Prospect Park’s Bullying Awareness Walk, which is held annually in the fall.
Having recently graduated from eighth grade, Maier wanted to leave a final gift before moving on to high school with “friendship benches” at schools. After being granted permission for the inclusion of the benches on school playgrounds, Maier set up a “You Caring” compassionate fundraising page with her parents.
It managed to raise $1,300 in only a few days.
Joe Magee, owner of Marty Magee’s Tavern on Lincoln Avenue in Prospect Park, offered his help and financial backing for friendship benches for all the schools in the Interboro School District.
“It is Hanna’s hope that kids will gain friendships and learn the importance of kindness and inclusion from these buddy benches,” said Tracy Maier, the teen’s mother.
