Villanova basketball coach Jay Wright has been selected to serve as an assistant to San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich on the staff of the 2016 USA Men’s Select Team.

The Select Team will practice and scrimmage the National team — which will compete at the Rio Olympics — next month in Las Vegas, writes Maria McGeary for Philadelphia Magazine.

The Select Team is comprised of current or former NCAA athletes with no more than a few years of NBA experience. The goal of the training camp, according to National Team managing director Jerry Colangelo, is to give these young stars “valuable experience at the USA Basketball National Team level.”

Colangelo went on to say that “for many of the Select Team players this is a continuation of their USA Basketball experiences, and for others it is an introduction into our pipeline.”

This marks a return to USA Basketball for Wright — he served as co-coach of the 2010 Select Team alongside Washington’s Lorenzo Romar. He served as head coach of the U.S. Team in 2005 at the World University Games, bringing home a gold medal, and again in 2007 at the Pan American games.

Naturally, Wright’s abounding success has given rise to speculation surrounding how long the Bucks County native plans to continue coaching at Villanova. Less than a week passed after this season’s national championship before a rumor surfaced that Wright was being courted by the Phoenix Suns.

Villanova fans rejoiced when Josh Hart, the season’s leading scorer, announced his decision to remain a Wildcat for his senior year.
