Philadelphia Union Coach Uses Copa America’s Arrival to Improve Team Play

Philadelphia Union coach Jim Curtin has used the hiatus that the MLS is on due to the Copa America Centenario to improve his team's play in the attacking third.

The Philadelphia Union is taking full advantage of the two-week Copa America Centenario tournament to allow players to rest and recover from injuries, and improve certain aspects of their game, writes Dave Zeitlin for CSNPhilly.com.

The team’s coaches are making sure to take advantage of all the learning opportunities from having such a big tournament in their backyard.

“Having Copa America in our city has been pretty valuable — looking at players, watching a lot of games, sending scouts to watch games, going myself to see training sessions,” said Union Head Coach Jim Curtin.

The tenants of Talen Energy Stadium in Chester currently sit atop the Eastern Conference after an eight-game unbeaten streak, a club record.

And Curtin has been busy thinking of ways to maintain the unbeaten streak when MLS play resumes on June 18.

“We’ve done a good job keeping possession in the final third,” he said. “But making that final pass a little more clinical is something we’ve been focusing on this week.”
