Wawa Gifts $5 Million to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

By

The Wawa Foundation, a nonprofit corporation founded by the Delco-based convenience store chain, has gifted $5 million to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, writes John George of the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The West Philadelphia hospital plans to formally announce the gift during a ceremony Tuesday morning to dedicate its newly constructed, 1,500-square-foot Wawa Volunteer Center in its Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care.

Future plans for the gift include multiple Wawa coffee & care carts (a room-service program for the parents of hospitalized children that began in 1992), an expanded CHOP hospitality and wayfinding corps, and additional volunteer programs at CHOP Care Network locations throughout the region.

In recognition of the gift, CHOP’s existing volunteer program, which in 2015 saw 500 volunteers deliver more than 30,000 service hours, will be officially re-named the “Wawa Volunteer Program.”

Wawa and CHOP have a long history or working together.

The late Richard D. Wood, who once led the Wawa Dairy Farm business, joined CHOP’s board of directors in 1950 and was named the hospital’s first full-time president in 1963.

Wawa previously raised more than $3 million to support CHOP programs, established the Wawa Endowed Chair in International Adoption, awarded charitable grants to fund programs related to the hospital’s NICU and HIV/AIDS programs, and donated multiple products for clinical programs.
