Boeing Secures Major Army Contract; Work to be Performed in Delco

By

Boeing – the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space, and security systems – secured a major modification contract from the U.S. Army to revamp as well as deliver Chinook military airlift helicopters.

According to a report on Nasdaq.com, the contract is worth $896.9 million, and will have Boeing revamp 27 CH-47F Chinook military airlift helicopters and provide 12 new units. The work is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 20, 2020 and will be carried out in Ridley Park, the home of Boeing’s CH-47 Chinook helicopter division.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its speed of 170 knots is faster than other existing utility and attack helicopters. Its main functions include troop movement, artillery emplacement, and battlefield resupply.

The U.S. Army has been using Boeing’s Chinook since 1962. The CH-47F/MH-47G modernization program is now in full-rate production, and will ensure this tandem rotor medium-lift helicopter remains in the Army at least through the 2030s.

Nasdaq.com said that Boeing “is trying to keep pace with a slew of helicopter demand both in the domestic and international markets.”

Last September, the U.S. government signed a deal with India involving the sale of Boeing’s 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 CH-47F Chinook multi-mission heavy-lift helicopters for the Indian Air Force. The contract is worth roughly $3 billion.
