Ny’Leek’s Village: How One Chester Mother Is Turning Tragedy Into a Mission for Her Community

On some days, Anita Carrington sets up at the same Chester intersection where her 9-year-old son was struck by a hit-and-run driver. She’s not there to grieve. She’s there to build something in his name, reports Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.

Carrington recently launched Ny’Leek’s Village, a nonprofit honoring her son, Ny’Leek Ellison, who recently passed from complications related to injuries he suffered in a crash near 9th and Tilghman streets in Chester last year, which left him paralyzed from the neck down,

The merchandise Carrington sells at that street corner, which includes shirts, sweatpants, tote bags, and more, features Ny’Leek’s photo alongside a simple message: “Slow down, save a life.”

Through Ny’Leek’s Village, Carrington hopes to give local children safe, constructive places to be after school, with programs focused on traffic safety, financial literacy, and recreational activities, including computer games.

She is also organizing a July 4 fashion show to raise awareness and support for the organization.

“I want to support the children all over the world,” Carrington said. “That’ll come one day. But I’m going to start right here in my community.”

Community leaders, including Chester City Councilman Fred Green, have praised both the effort and its message about pedestrian safety.
