When you live at Dunwoody Village, you’re living at one of the Delaware Valley’s first continuing care retirement communities.
History on campus
It’s an 83-acre campus in Newtown Square that’s steeped in history.
The wooded property along West Chester Pike still contains the Hood Octagonal Schoolhouse, a rare eight-sided one-room schoolhouse built in 1842. Today, it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The schoolhouse remains active today, hosting annual open houses with volunteers in period attire reenacting 19th-century classroom lessons, along with educational tours for local school groups.
A 1924 barn with a glazed brick silo still stands on the grounds alongside the headwaters of Hunter Run, a visual link to the property’s agricultural past.
Aging in Place
Since opening in 1974, Dunwoody Village has focused on “aging in place,” allowing residents to transition between independent living, personal care, memory care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation services without leaving campus.
The community was considered forward-thinking in its original design, with heated hallways connecting buildings, large atria filled with natural light and live plants, and construction intended to reduce noise and improve fire safety.
Resident Living
Today, the campus includes 243 apartments and country houses, 81 private personal care residences, 81 private skilled nursing rooms, secure memory support areas, and a rehabilitation wing.
Residents can choose from studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, carriage homes, and country houses, many featuring terrace views, spacious closets, and individual temperature controls.
The amenities are plentiful. There are multiple dining venues, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, putting greens, and a croquet court.
You can spend time in the library, the wood shop, the arts and crafts room, and catch lectures and performances in the auditorium.
Dunwoody residents enjoy transportation services, a gift shop, bank services, a salon, and weekly housekeeping.
The pet-friendly community also features resident-driven additions, including a wildlife refuge, floral studio, pickleball league, and on-site farmer’s market.
Educational lectures, language labs, spiritual services, wellness programming, and the community’s Passport to Wellness health coordination program are designed to support long-term quality of life.
Penrose Carriage Home residents also have access to a dedicated shuttle service to the main community building.
A recent multi-year renovation converted all semi-private rooms in the Health and Wellness Pavilion into private suites while updating dining, therapy, and fitness spaces.
Quality Ratings
Dunwoody Village has received a Five-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services every year from 2010 through 2024, and the William Hood Dunwoody Care Center at Dunwoody Village was named a 2026 Best Nursing Home by U.S. News & World Report for both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care.
Dunwoody Village is a place where history and the best of modern senior living come together.
