Upper Darby Native Tina Fey Discusses the Future of ‘Mean Girls’ Franchise

Tina Fey, creator of the hit franchise “Mean Girls,” recently appeared at a Philadelphia event and discussed the future of the film series.

Upper Darby native Tina Fey recently said she won’t be returning to the Mean Girls franchise, following the highly criticized musical adaptation released in 2024, writes Connor Surmonte for Page Six

Fey appeared during a HISTORYTalks event last month in Philadelphia, where she discussed the 2004 film and its subsequent adaptations.

The 55-year-old actress and comedian took time to celebrate the films during the event. The original Mean Girls screenplay took inspiration from Rosalind Wiseman’s nonfiction work, Queen Bees and Wannabes.

“We always, in every iteration, tried to honor the source material, which is like a sociology book about how to help girls through relational aggression and behaviors like that,” said Fey

Mean Girls, written by Fey, who also played the high school’s math teacher, starred Lindsay Lohan as the film’s protagonist, Cady Heron. The Plastics clique featured Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert.

A made-for-TV sequel was released in 2011, followed by a Broadway musical in 2018. Sabrina Carpenter, another actress with Pennsylvania roots, played Heron in 2020, and Reneé Rapp starred as Regina George.

Rapp reprised her Broadway role as George in the 2024 adaptation, while Australian actress Angourie Rice was cast as Heron.
