Boothwyn Teacher Battling Cancer Honored at Annual Phillies Event

Scott Messick, a PE teacher at Boothwyn Elementary School battling cancer, had a special school visit that included a Phillies honor.

Students at Boothwyn Elementary School were treated to a special surprise when Scott Messick, Boothwyn’s physical education teacher, visited the school amid his battle with cancer, writes Mike DeNardo for Audacy

Messick has been battling a rare form of appendix cancer and underwent an intensive surgery in March before spending over a month at a Baltimore, Md., hospital in recovery.

He was called into the school under the ruse of returning a laptop, completely unsuspecting of what awaited him inside. Students, meanwhile, had gathered in the gym after being told they were filming a get-well video for Messick

Surprised cheers erupted from the students when Messick arrived, greeted by a banner that read “Happy Teacher Appreciation.”

Music teacher Holly Bragg had another surprise for Messick, having nominated him to be one of the Phillies All-Star Teachers honored at Citizens Bank Park’s Teacher Appreciation Night last Friday. Team ambassador Mickey Morandini and the Phillie Phanatic delivered the special news.

“Just seeing the kids is absolutely amazing,” said Messick. “I miss them so much. I’ve been to a lot of assemblies here. I can’t think of one that was this loud!”

The community at Boothwyn has provided endless support for Messick since his diagnosis, sending everything from gift cards to a comfy chair for his recovery.
